A Cast of Dozens: Background NPCs for the game

Instead of the usual weekend write up with a single detailed character, I'm doing a group of related characters your players can run across in your adventures. Some a directly inspired by certain TV shows and movies, others are more generic in nature.

This week's collection is your typical (or maybe not so typical) rural villagers. Almost all of them have  potential story hooks in their backgrounds, and can easily be dropped into a game.



 The Village of Mayburleigh
A  quaint little village that is not quite what it seems

Colonel Ernest Holden OBE (Retired)
Country Squire and ex-UNIT Officer

The Colonel retired from a long career in UNIT and returned to the village of his birth. Most of the village thinks the fellow is bit on the barmy side, with his going on about alien invasions and time travelling police boxes. Of course it's all true, though he is a bit on the eccentric, side, especially since his wife passed away. He still stays in touch with some of the old team, and has some pull with the current UNIT command.

Reverend Melissa Buhari 
Local Psychic Vicar
The cheerful and friendly local vicar. She's had the job for the last five years and the whole village has come to love and appreciate her. Everyone in the village says she's the most understanding person they've ever known. A lot of that is due to her undeveloped psychic abilities, she's not really aware of them, she just tends to get ideas about what's on their minds and help people sort it out.

Nathan Holcombe
Solicitor and Pub owner.
In a small village like this, it's not uncommon for people to have multiple business interests. Nathan Holcombe is a former London solicitor who left the city for health reasons, and ended up taking over the Queen Mary's Grace Inn and Pub after the previous owner retired. He keeps a small law practice out of a spare room of the pub, but for the most part the bar is what makes him money.

Janet  Holcombe
Nathan's Wife and Alien Fugitive
Janet is not an advertising executive with no living parents from Surrey like she has told her husband. She is in fact a Drahvin slave warrior, unlike most of her clone sisters, she achieved full self awareness and rebelled against her Elite commander. Escaping to Earth, she easily blended in with the human populace and fell in love with Nathan. She thinks she has escaped her past, but she still keeps an eye over her shoulder.

Mrs. Glenda Hardwicke
Former Lady of the Manor.
Hardwicke House has been in Mrs. Hardwick's family for three hundred years. So it was an utter disaster when it became clear the family fortunes were lost in the economic crisis. Mrs. Hardwick has been forced to sell the house to some American entrepreneur. She's had to take up residence close into the village, but still maintains much of her aristocratic bearing, much to the dismay of many of the villagers. She schemes much of the time how to regain her fortunes and the family estate.

Gordon Waverley
Technology Entrepreneur and New Owner of  Hardwicke House
Famous Computer mogul Gordon Waverley purchased Hardwicke House from the distressed owners, and has been making a number of upgrades to the house and surrounding village (he hardly believed there was no Wi-fi in the village!)  He's found Mrs. Hardwicke and her sticking to tradition and the proper role of the Lord of the Manor a bit difficult to deal with at times. Especially right now with his next generation tablet about to roll out.

Tom is just your typical young fellow with a van that makes a living doing various yard work and chores around the village throughout the county.  He knows almost everyone in the region, and many of the ladies he works for know him far better than than they would want to admit to their husbands.

Brian Anslow
Trainspotter,  and UFO Witness
About two years ago Brian was out one night watching for trains as he often does. Instead of the Hunslet Class 05 he was expecting, he was witness to a pair of UNIT fighters shooting down a Sontaran scout ship. Shortly afterwards a bunch people in black uniforms showed up, cordoned off the area and said a fighter crashed while on a training exercise. Naturally no one in the village believes him, and his rambling on about what happened has made him quite unpopular in the village.
